BARRY Pinches has won the latest event in the Players Tour Championship after beating Ronnie O’Sullivan 4-3 in Monday night’s final at the EIS in Sheffield.

O’Sullivan came into the match in good form, having notched up his 600th career century earlier in the tournament, and began the final well, taking the opening frame with breaks of 60 and 47.

Pinches took the next to level the scores, but O’Sullivan soon hit something like his best form, winning the next two with breaks of 83 and 58 to make it 3-1.

O’Sullivan struggled to make the most of his opportunities to cross the winning line, and didn’t score a single point in frame five as Pinches reduced the deficit to just one frame.

In the sixth, O’Sullivan once again missed chances to secure victory, and his opponent eventually won it on the black to force a decider.

The final frame saw a prolonged tactical battle early on, before Pinches took advantage of some inviting balls and made a break of 64 to secure his first ever career title.

Pinches, who turned 40 in July, has been a professional since 1989, but has failed to fulfil the potential he showed as a youngster, despite some notable tournament victories against the likes of Jimmy White, Marco Fu, Graeme Dott and Stephen Lee during his long career.
