Higgins Wins Welsh Open Title

Date: 31 January 2010

JOHN Higgins has won the 2010 Totesport.com Welsh Open title following a 9-4 victory over Allister Carter in Newport.
Reigning World Champion Higgins surged ahead in the first frame of the match as he managed to squeeze the cue ball through a tiny gap to pot a red which began what was a commanding break of 95.
He followed this by making a break of 101 in the next to make it 2-0, which included an entertaining double.
It was all one-way traffic as Higgins added the next partly due to a superbly cut blue, and a bad miss on a red from his opponent.
Higgins’s superb form continued in the next with a brilliant 137 clearance saw him leading 4-0 going into the mid-session interval.
Carter began a fight back of sorts in the fifth, but Higgins quashed any hopes the Englishman had of narrowing the gap as he took advantage of a missed red to make an 81 to steal the frame.
The next frame looked to be heading Carter’s way when he missed an easy pot, but when Higgins squandered a red to the middle pocket, he let his opponent back in to break his duck.
The seventh frame was an unusually scrappy affair, but Higgins had his share of luck as he eventually restored his authority.
Carter looked on course to win the eighth and final frame of the afternoon session, but he missed an easy pink with 66 points to his name to allow Higgins back in and snatch it with 67 left on the table.
The evening session began little better for Carter as Higgins made a break of 72, leaving him needing just two more for victory.
But Carter wasn’t ready to give in just yet and fought back in the next with a gritty break of 60.
The 11th frame was truly extraordinary as Higgins looked on course for a maximum break, but after potting nine reds and nine blacks he missed a frame ball, and Carter came back to the table to make a break of 73 to grab the frame from the jaws of defeat to make it 7-4.
Carter looked to be holding the momentum in the 12th as he fluked a red into the middle pocket, but Higgins took his chance when it arrived to make a break of 40, before taking the frame after a protracted safety battle.
Higgins crossed the winning line in the 13th frame with a break of 76.
In his post-match interview, Higgins was clearly delighted with the magnificent form he had shown throughout the tournament. He said: “That's the best I have ever felt to be honest, I didn't know what was going on.”
“I was zoned in and I am delighted with how I played.
“But I also got a bit of luck, there were a lot of little rubs of the green that snooker players can see that went my way. Ali also had a few bad kicks.”
Carter, who was forced to relinquish the title he won last year, paid tribute to his opponent’s breathtaking form. He said: “I was under all sorts of pressure and I was just glad to make a game of it.
“I would have been glad to get back to 7-5, but he's done me 9-4 in the end.
“The crowd have been great this week and I am disappointed I couldn't keep my title, but I had a good go.”
