Higgins v Carter in Welsh Final

Date: 30 January 2010

REIGNING World Champion John Higgins will face last year’s Welsh Open winner Ali Carter in tomorrow’s final after the ‘Wizard from Wishaw’ beat Ronnie O’Sullivan 6-4 in Newport.
World number one O’Sullivan began the match as the stronger player as he led 1-0 and 2-1 but a thrilling total clearance of 138, the highest break of the tournament, saw Higgins level the match before winning the next to lead 3-2.
O’Sullivan fought back to level the scores once more, and went on to take full advantage of a Higgins slip in the seventh to make a 95 and lead 4-3.
The eighth frame was a scrappy and somewhat lethargic affair which Higgins eventually won, and won the ninth to leave him needing just one more for vitory.
O’Sullivan had a chance in the tenth when he potted a superb risky red, but he went in-off as the cue ball fell into the middle pocket.
Higgins seized his opportunity and on the frame, securing his place against Ali Carter on Sunday.
After the match, Higgins joked about his plan to beat Carter. He told BBC Wales: “Ali is next door to me at the hotel so I'm going to keep my TV on all night to try to put him off - I can sleep through it!
“He has done great to get through to the final and I'm sure he's wanting a bit of the limelight.”
Talking about his own game, Higgins said: “My confidence had gone and that's when the consistency goes but I'm feeling a lot better now.”
Earlier in the day, Ali Carter defeated Stephen Maguire 6-3.
