Mark Selby Wins Betfred World Championship

Mark Selby3MARK Selby won the World Championship for the second time with an 18-14 victory against Ding Junhui in a hard-fought, gritty final at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield.

Selby, who previously won the title two years ago, surged into a 6-0 lead with a break of 91 in the opening frame, followed by runs of 76, 120 and 70, before Ding took a lengthy seventh frame and he added the eighth to trail 6-2 at the end of Sunday afternoon’s opening session.

The ‘Jester from Leicester’, 32, took the opening frame of the second session, but Ding soon began an spirited fightback as breaks of 76, 103 and 89 helped him cut his deficit to 7-5 at the mid-session interval.

Selby dominated frame 13, but breaks of 86 and 55 took Ding to within a frame of his opponent, but two lengthy, tactical frames saw Selby end the session 10-7 with the time at well past midnight.

A break of 89 saw Ding continue his comeback in the opening frame of Monday afternoon’s session, and he added the next to leave him just one behind.

Both players soon raised their games – Selby made a break of 126 to take frame 20, but Ding struck back in the next with a 103 to stay on his opponent’s tail.

Ding’s comeback was brought to a halt as breaks of 52 and 68 helped Selby reassert his authority on the match and go 13-10 in front, and though Ding took the next with a run of 52, Selby added frame 25 to go 14-11 ahead going into the final session.

Needing just four more frames to go claim the title, Selby made a statement of intent as a break of 57 gave him the opening frame of the final session, and Ding’s break of 60 wasn’t enough to give him the next as Selby stole it to go 16-11 in front.

Ding, 29, did the audience of 210 million who watched the World Championship in China proud as he stayed in the match with breaks of 73 and 70 to keep him in contention at 16-13 going into the mid-session interval, and when play resumed he added a run of 103 to go within two of his opponent.

The party was already starting in Leicester as Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham confirmed Leicester City as Premier League champions, and at the Crucible, Selby worked towards making it a double celebration as he dominated frame 21 to go within one of victory, and a break of 74 in the next saw him win the match 18-14 and become world champion for the second time.

Selby was joined by his wife Vikki and daughter Sofia as celebrations began at the home of snooker. Reflecting on a gruelling victory, he said: “It’s a great, great feeling.

“To win it once was a huge achievement and something I’d always wanted to do but I never dreamt of winning it twice.

“I’m quite emotional. When you look at people who’ve won it twice, to join that elite group is something special.

“It’s just grit and determination – I never give in, no matter how badly I’m playing.”

Reflecting on Claudio Ranieri’s team causing arguable the biggest shock in English football victory, Foxes fan Selby said: “I can’t believe it. I don’t know what’s more of a shock – me winning it twice or Leicester being Premier League champions.”

Despite feeling tired after a tough 17-day campaign, Selby planned on celebrating his win. He said: “I’m really tired at the moment but I’m sure I’ll last the night.”

At the post-final party which went on well into the early hours, Selby stayed the course and even entertained the crowd with a karaoke rendition of ‘Sweet Caroline’.

The victory earned Selby snooker’s biggest ever first prize of £330,000 and the famous trophy.

Ding, who battled through three qualifying rounds just to reach the Crucible, picked up £137,000 for his efforts. He said: “Five years ago I was in the semi-final and this year was one step up, so maybe next year I’m going to win it.

“This season I’ve been working with Terry (Griffiths) and I think I’ve improved my game a lot. If I keep playing like that I will win more tournaments.”

The highest break of the tournament was made by Kyren Wilson, who made a 143 during the 20th frame his 13-8 quarter-final defeat to Selby, earning him £20,000.
