JUDD Trump has beaten Neil Robertson 9-7 to make it through to the final of the Williamhill.com UK Championship.
The 22-year-old from Bristol, who finished runner-up at this year’s World Championship, completed breaks of 51, 84 and 67 to lead his fellow left-hander 2-0, 3-2 and 4-3 in the opening stages, but a composed break of 77 saw Robertson level at 4-4 going into the evening session.
Trump made the early running in the evening session as he extended his lead to 7-5, but the 29-year-old, who won the World Championship in 2010, fought his way back into the match by frustrating his opponent.
He pulled one back to make it 7-6 before a re-rack was eventually required in frame 14 following a lengthy tactical exchange in which both players ended up tapping the cue ball behind a loose red. Another long safety battle ensued when play resumed, and it was 28 minutes without a ball being potted before Robertson eventually gained control and tied the match with a run of 83.
However, Trump was not going to allow the Australian to gain control of the match and made a 51 in the next to move within a frame of victory.
The final frame was a nervy, scrappy affair, but Trump ultimately did enough with a closing break of 27 to book his place in the final, where he will meet the winner of the match between Ricky Walden and Mark Allen.
After the match, Trump admitted he had been frustrated by his opponent’s tactics. He said: “I think Neil tried to slow it down and make things awkward for me.
“In the end I think we were over-trying and that’s why we started to miss a few. It’d be nice to end the year on a high and win this tournament.”
